Hillside Incense is born in Fujian, within a family shrine where ancestors are remembered across generations. In this setting, incense is not merely made — it is inherited. The act of crafting it in the ancestral home is believed to invite blessing, while grounding the maker in a state of stillness and care.
That spirit informs every stage of our process. Rather than surrendering entirely to industrial production, we follow a slower path shaped by handcraft, traditional tools, and exacting care. This approach preserves both consistency and sensitivity — allowing the botanicals to be handled with greater nuance, reducing the need for binding powders, and letting the fragrance emerge with greater purity and depth.
We work with women incense makers whose disciplined way of life helps preserve the clarity and purity of the incense throughout the making process.
